Admissions

The programs are available to students from surrounding towns and cities whose IEP’s require a structured, therapeutic, educational setting. Please call (978) 374-3487 for admissions information. The admissions process involved an introductory orientation meeting and a two-hour scheduled visit to the classroom and/or group meetings. The program is a demanding one which requires some degree of commitment and investment from the student. Working together (students/teachers/staff) can ensure the desired and expected success. Every effort is made to invite family involvement in support of the educational and therapeutic goals.

Philosophy

The Alternative Schools (Lower, Middle and High School) provide a highly structured and therapeutic educational experience. It emphasizes academic and social/emotional growth through relationship building between educational staff and students. Students are encouraged to identify issues that impede success in school, work and in the community.

The program promotes personal empowerment by encouraging students to accept responsibility for and the consequences of their actions. An emotionally safe and supportive school environment will allow students to assess and pursue their future personal, educational and vocational options.

Middle School & High School

The Haverhill Alternative High School (grades 9-12) and the Haverhill Alternative Middle School (grades 6-8) are designed to provide a structured, demanding educational setting in a caring and engaging therapeutic milieu.

The programs offer an active, hands-on learning environment utilizing a small group instructional format. The emphasis is on promoting a meaningful and purposeful educational and therapeutic experience in order to meet each student’s unique learning needs.

The post-admissions process includes identifying and building on existing student strengths through the use of extensive evaluation upon the student’s entrance into the program.

The overarching goal is to integrate the student’s thinking, feelings and behaviors to achieve appropriate and relevant educational and social outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of the student-staff relationships is to promote consistent academic growth as well as to enhance social and emotional well-being. Conscious effort goes into balancing expectations with empathy and balancing standards with sensitivity.
